In Apex Legends, weapons are generally in two categories: weapon type and ammo type. The weapon types include assault rifles (ARs), sub-machine guns (SMGs), light machine guns (LMGs), shotguns, sniper rifles, and marksman weapons. The ammo types, while having some overlap with the weapon types, are shotgun, sniper, light, heavy, energy and arrows.
The Combat Advanced Round Sub-machine Gun, or C.A.R. SMG is Season 11: Escape’s debut weapon, and the first new SMG in the game since the Volt in Season 6: Boosted. That said, what kind of ammo does it use? The answer is actually not quite cut and dry, and digs deeper into just what makes the C.A.R. SMG weapon so special.
Unlike other weapons in the game, the C.A.R. SMG is not confined to a single ammunition type. While the weapon isn’t compatible with any specialty or class-specific ammo like sniper or energy, the C.A.R. SMG is able to use both light and heavy ammo. You can toggle between ammo types by switching the fire mode. Both fire modes on the C.A.R. SMG are auto-fire, making the C.A.R. SMG the first weapon in the game to have two separate auto-fire modes.
