If you're a fan of the Dead Space series and have been reliving your fears in the Dead Space remake, then you've probably been wondering what the Markers are. If you haven't completed the game, there may be spoilers throughout this guide, so read on with caution. Dead Space has two different kinds of Markers: Black Markers and Red Markers. They both serve a relatively similar purpose in creating a Convergence Event, also known as a necromorph invasion, but have subtle differences that really divide their individual purposes. More than anything, it's important to know that Isaac Clarke is fighting these creatures at all because of these very Markers.

What are black markers?
Black Markers are large, stone-like artifacts that resemble a double helix or the shape of a DNA strand. They act as a ship for transporting necromorphs across space to be released on whatever planet they land on. The Black Marker also sends a sort of force wave to the lifeforms around where it lands, asking them to replicate it, which results in what is known as Red Markers.
What are red markers?
Red Markers are essentially man-made Black Markers that are built to create a Convergence Event. Since the Red Markers are created by the life forms trying to appease the Black Marker, a Convergence Event can be enacted by killing those same life forms. A Red Marker can also create a Convergence Event with the help of someone who can help facilitate one, also known as an architect.
