How to start New Game Plus in God of War Ragnarok

Time to go again.

New Game Plus was finally added to God of War Ragnarok on April 5, 2023, to the delight of fans who have wanted to do another playthrough of the PlayStation exclusive ever since it was released back in November 2022. Here's everything you need to know about how to start New Game Plus in God of War.

How to get New Game Plus in God of War Ragnarok

To get New Game Plus added to your game, make sure you have the latest God of War Ragnarok update installed on your PlayStation. At the time of writing, this is Game Version 04.00. To check for updates, highlight God of War Ragnarok on your PS4 or PS5, press the Options button on your controller, and select Check for Updates.

Any available update will then download and install automatically, so it's just a case of waiting for it to patch, and then you're ready to jump in.

How to access New Game Plus in God of War Ragnarok

Once the God of War Ragnarok update is downloaded and installed, you'll need to have a save file with the Main Story Quest completed. If you've yet to finish the game, you can't access New Game Plus.

With New Game Plus unlocked, the option to start it will appear on the main menu. Select it, and you'll start God of War Ragnarok over from the beginning, with a few notable differences.

What carries over into New Game Plus in God of War Ragnarok?

While usually starting a new save file means wiping the slate clean and beginning anew, God of War Ragnarok's New Game Plus mode lets you begin the game with the following, carried over from your previous completed save:

  • Equipment
  • Stats
  • Skills

New Game Plus also adds new content, which is as follows:

  • Armor of the Black Bear
  • Spartan Armor 
  • Ares Armor
  • Zeus Armor 
  • Spartan Aspis Shield
  • Increased level cap
  • Increased equipment level cap from Level 9 to Level 9+
  • New armor appearances
  • New Enchantments
  • New Progression Paths
  • Expanded Niflheim Arena 
  • Black and White Render Mode 
  • Ability to skip cinematics
  • New Photo Mode character expressions
