The Genshin Impact Perilous Expedition event runs from July 27, 2023, to August 7, 2023, and involves a series of combat challenges using three unique teams. There are no trial characters in this event, so if you've been building a bunch of units for the difficult Abyss runs as of late, then you'll have the upper hand in this challenge.
How to unlock the Genshin Impact Perilous Expedition event
To unlock Perilous Expedition in Genshin Impact, you must first complete the following prerequisites:
- Reach Adventure Rank 20 or above
- Complete Prologue: Act III - Song of the Dragon and Freedom
Once those are done, you'll receive an Event Quest called Complex Cartography, which involves speaking with an Adventurer from Liyue west of Gandharva Ville. This also marks the location of the Event Domain, where all challenges will take place.

How to complete the Genshin Impact Perilous Expedition event
Interact with the Event Domain marked in the World Map, west of Gandharva Ville, to begin a series of five combat challenges.
Difficulty Selector
As soon as you begin a challenge, you'll be asked to select your preferred difficulty. Genshin Impact is a very forgiving game, so you only need to complete the Normal difficulty to get the Primogem rewards. The rest of the rewards are negligible bonuses, so I highly recommend going for the easiest difficulty if you're new or don't have many characters built.
Buffs, Party Setup, and Ley Line Disorder
Each challenge will have a unique Ley Line Disorder and different buffs you can get based on the number of unique characters you deploy. There are three rounds in every challenge, and you will be given the option to set up a new team in between. This means that buffs will stack as you advance through the rounds (i.e. one buff in the first round, two in the second round, three in the third), assuming that you use 12 unique characters in total.
If you're competitive, you can play in the event with unique characters. But if you only want the Primogems, then I don't think you need to stress about the team setups or the buffs—I don't find them useful unless playing in Dire difficulty.
Battle
The combat portion itself is simple: defeat all the enemies to advance. You can change your team between each round, but you can also opt to reuse characters you previously used—so the mechanics are fairly stress-free.
Once you've successfully completed a challenge, don't forget to claim rewards from the event menu. You only need to complete Normal difficulty to get the Primogems, regardless of how many unique characters you use.
