Pal Variants, Explained – Palworld

A new kind of shiny...

While exploring Palworld, you may come across strange Pals with the word Cryst in their names. These Pals are typically a very rare variant of fairly common Pal, so here's everything you need to know about Cryst Pals in Palworld.

What is a Pal Variant in Palworld?

Variant Pals are Pals that differ in typing to the standard for their kind. This alternative typing enables the Pal in question to have new base abilities, and sometimes entirely new Partner Skill. Additionally, their appearances are rather different from their normal versions, often taking on characteristics that reflect their typing. Typically, you'll know if you've seen or captured a Pal Variant if they have a special suffix in their name.

  • Cryst - Ice Typing
  • Ignis - Fire Typing
  • Noct - Dark Typing
  • Lux - Electric Typing

Jolthog, as its name implies, is a very common Electric type Pal that comes with some basic Electric moves and the Jolt Bomb Partner Skill. It is small and has yellow spikes on its back reflecting the Electric typing.

However, I have also found and captured a Jolthog Cryst at random while exploring Palworld, and unlike a normal Jolthog, she is of the Ice Typing rather than the species' standard Electric Typing.

Notice the significant change in appearance between the two Jolthogs. Not only that, the Cryst Variant comes with the Cold Bomb Partner Skill instead of Jolt Bomb, and Ice Typing Skills instead of Electric. The two Jolthogs are functionally different from each other, and those differences are what make a Pal a Variant. This goes beyond just being a shiny like in the Pokemon series.

As of now, I'm not certain how many Pals have Variants in Palworld. There are, after all, a lot of Pals to hunt and capture, and their Variants seem to be exceedingly rare even among rare Pals. However, if and when I learn more about these unique Pals, I'll be sure to update you right here.
