I love exploring with Kate, but getting to see her origin story is an awesome experience. Check out this Homecoming A Young Kate walkthrough to help you get through the Vanishing Act bonus chapter and to see where it all started.
Vanishing Act Bonus Chapter Guide - Homecoming
While older Kate is solving murders and vanishing acts, young Kate has a group project that she needs to hand in at the end of the day. While she has her part, Zach, her group partner, seems to have lost his. The goal is to find it before four o'clock, so you both don't get bad grades.
Zach's Locker
Zach's locker is the one with the stickers (1a), so open it. A toxic green smoke is coming out of it, and it stinks. You have to deal with it first, but first, you need to find protection for your hands. Click on Kate's locker (1b) to grab the camera and bobby pin. She can also try to open the pencil case, but the zipper will get stuck, and you need to force it open with something.
Use the bobby pin to unlock the janitor's cart (1c) and take the green gloves. Now, you are equipped to touch whatever has died in Zach's locker. Remove the two books, and the smell will go away. Remove the rest of the mess to reveal a stack of papers, but sadly, Zach's assignment isn't among them.
The only place left to check is behind the jacket, but there's nothing other than black smudges. Zach explains that it's eye black, which footballers use, but he doesn't. He accuses Dirk since they have a disagreement over Zach being the starting quarterback. Kate takes a photo of it for evidence.
Dirk is even covered in black eye at that moment. You need to distract him to search through his locker. Dirk likes Jennie, so you need to get her to ask him to move. Head outside to find her. You'll run into Allie, who is waiting for you to take her home, but she'll just have to entertain herself since you are busy.
Jennie and Dirk
You'll find Jennie with her friend outside, talking about the love letter she wrote for the boy she likes. Unfortunately for Kate and Zach, it's not Dirk but Trevor. Jennie will drop the letter into her backpack, and your plan now is to grab it and take it to Dirk instead.
Zach tries to take the letter but fails. You need to come up with a better plan to distract the two cheerleaders. Go to Trevor and ask him to talk to Jennie, but he doesn't like her. What a love problem all of these people are running into. He will only agree to talk to Jennie if Zach brings him a poetry book.
The only option for the two now is for Zach to bike home. The bike, however, is locked, and you don't know the password. Click on the paper stuck to it, and you'll see an AV request form. Since Allie is in the AV club, ask her about it.
AV Club
She'll take you to the club room and find the cassette for you. Now, all you have to do is find a camcorder to play it on. Take the box cutter (2a) and open the second box (2b). You'll find a dead camcorder inside, so you have to charge it up. Put it down on the desk and keep looking. Move the bag of nachos to find a charging adapter (2c), then open the drawers in the back to get a battery pack (2d).
Plug the charger in and add the battery to it. It will charge up fast, so you can add the battery and then the cassette to the camcorder. The image will be really fuzzy as the video heads need cleaning. You need to ask Allie how to do that since she is the only AV Club member.
Allie tells you that you need to grab a yellow cassette (3a) to clean the camcorder. It is too tall to reach, so pick up the stepladder (3b) to climb up and get it. Put the tape into the camcorder and then put the actual tape you want to look at once it finishes cleaning.
You'll see a bunch of cheerleaders doing various cheer routines, but this doesn't help much. Head outside and to the bulletin board. Kate's photo is crooked, so use the box cutter to remove the thumbtacks. You'll see underneath a photo of one of the cheerleaders from the tape. Pay attention to her in the tape and when she is holding red, green, and blue pom-poms in that exact order.
Zach bikes off home, and Kate goes to search for a way to alter Jennie's letter. Check the pile of leaves (4a) next to the stairs, where you'll find a toolbox key. Go to the AV club again to find Allie and open the toolbox (4b).
Game Toy
You'll get pliers and a flashlight with no batteries in the box. Click on Allie to ask her about it. She tells you she took the batteries for her Game Toy, and the only way you will get them back is if you pass the impossible level for her.
- (1) Push the bottom middle block up.
- (2) Push the two blocks on the sides to the left and the right.
- (3) Push the rock block up into the water block.
- (4) Push the rock block to the right.
- (5) Push the rock block up into its place.
- (6) Push the fire block up into the air block.
- (7) Push the fire block to the left.
- (8) Push the fire block down into its spot.
- (9) Push the top block to the left.
- (10) Push the middle block down.
- (11) Push the air block to the left into the water block.
- (12) Push the air block down.
- (13) Push the air block to the right into its spot.
- (14) Push the bottom block into the top block.
- (15) Push the water block to the left.
- (16) Push the water block up and into its spot.
Save Allie's game, and she'll give you the batteries. Put them into the flashlight, and Kate will pick it up. Use the flashlight to light up under the desk, where you'll find the liquid eraser. Once that's done, Allie will take the batteries back and continue playing her Game Toy.
Then, head to Kate's locker, use the pliers to open the pencil case, and grab the purple gel pen. Kate has collected everything she needs, so go outside to wait for Zach. Give the book to Trevor, and he'll distract Jennie.
This time, you'll be able to take Jennie's love letter. Erase Trevor's name and add Dirk's, and now you can go and give it to him. Dirk will go behind the gym to meet up with Jennie, so the two of you can now look through his locker.
Sadly, Dirk isn't as dumb as Zach thinks to write his locker combination on the lock, but he did give us clues. The numbers are years when the football team became state champions. Now, all you need to find is a Fitzroy every year and his number, and you'll get the combination, which is 812415.
Go through Dirk's locker, but you won't find Zach's paper. However, you will find a failed science paper, black smudges all across the wall, and a gel deodorant, which you will take. Dirk will come back angry, yelling at Zach that he had lied about Jennie. He'll shove Zach into a trash can, and Zach will get stuck.
Luckily, you just stole the gel deodorant from Dirk, so you can use it to grease up Zach and get him out. He'll get out and spill all the trash on the floor. Kate will recognize the smell from his locker, so now you have to search through it. You'll Zach's padlock that's been corroded by something.
Science Room
The teacher comes out, stating that they are out of time, but Kate manages to convince him for another half an hour. They better make it count. The two partners will go into the Science room to investigate the padlock.
Click on the shelf to get a cabinet handle (6a). Put it on the cabinet (6b) so you can open it and take out the baking soda. Then, open the backpack, and you will find a can of cola (6c). Once you have them both, add them to the volcano to cause an eruption. Your teacher will run out to get the janitor.
Now that he is gone pick up the green book (6d), the yellow book (6e), and the red book (6f) from the middle drawer of the desk. Add them all to the shelf. There is a briefcase on the floor, and we can open it with the help of the books. Pay attention to the shape and color of the symbols on the briefcase, which match those on the books. Count them, and you'll get the password 3532.
Laboratory
You'll get a lab key from the briefcase. Unlock the door and head into the laboratory. You'll find the same black smudges on a beaker. We want to figure out what was in the beaker, so you must mix all the chemicals correctly. This time, you'll use the previous solution to figure out how much of which chemical goes in the beaker. You need three red triangles, five green circles, three blue squares, and two yellow diamonds.
Once you've solved it, put the padlock into the beaker, and it will start corroding even more. Pick up the chemical and use it on the padlock for the teacher's drawer. You'll see that the teacher's son is suited to an athletic scholarship. That's not suspicious at all. Underneath the paper, you will also find a magnet.
You can use the magnet to open the chemical cabinet padlock. Just arrange the gears so that two of the same color are touching on each gear. Of course, if the gears aren't touching, you can ignore it; just match the ones that are. If you're struggling, check out the image below.
You'll find Zach's project inside. The teacher stole it so his son would get the scholarship. With this solved, Zach tells Kate she should be a detective since she is so good at it, but Kate tells him she wants to be a doctor. Oh Kate, just you wait!
