How to ungroup units or delete unit groups in Age of Empires IV

Didn't mean to select those units!

One of the most convenient features in Age of Empires IV is the ability to set collections of units to be selected when you press a number on your keyboard. These are called Control Groups because you set them by pressing and holding the Control button (Ctrl), then pressing the number to which you'd like to assign them.

However, the game doesn't exactly explain how to ungroup these groups if you'd like to open that number up for another collection of units. To do this, you can use one of these options:

  • Reset the group: Make sure you have no units or buildings selected and simply hold Ctrl and press the number you'd like to clear (e.g., Ctrl + 1 with no units or buildings selected). That entire group will be deleted, and it will not select any units when you press that number.
  • Overwrite the group: Select the units you want to set to that Control Group and set the Control Group again. This clears the previous units assigned to that number and places the newly assigned group to that number.

That's all there is to resetting or clearing a control group. Alternatively, if you want to add to an existing group, you can do that by selecting the units you want to add and pressing Shift + Control Group Number.
