If you want to let your darker side run free in Backpack Battles, choose the Reaper class. While most shop items are random your choice of a subclass is a straight one-of-five choice, so find all Reaper subclasses described and compared below.
All available subclasses for Pyromancer in Backpack Battles
After fighting your way through about half the Backpack Battles on a run you’ll be given a one-off choice where you can pick up a subclass. It still needs to be placed in your pack as a normal item, but gives you some extra direction and some nice skills and buffs.
Subclass | Item | Item Effect |
Alchemist | Cauldron | Every 5 seconds gain either 10 Health, 3 Mana, or 2 Heat. Starred Food triggers the effect 15 percent faster. When you enter the shop an adjacent Potion is upgraded. |
Vampiress | Nocturnal Lock Lifter | Start: 2 Vampirism. Starred weapons steal 20 percent Life. Healing is amplified by 25 percent. Any Poison damage also steals life through Vampirism. |
Witch | Mr Struggles | Inflict Fatigue every 3 seconds. When you're debuffed has a 35 percent chance to inflict the same debuff on opponent. If your health drops below 50 percent, starred items trigger 100 percent faster (once) for 8 seconds. Plushies are offered in the Shop. |
Venomancer | Snake | Start: Gain 4 Luck and 30 percent max Health for each starred Pet. Inflict 2 Poison every 2 seconds. You have a 5 percent chance per Luck that your opponent's Poison can't be cleansed. |
Hexblade | Cursed Dagger | On stun: Extra attack. On hit: Inflict 2 random debuffs. This and starred items have +1 percent accuracy and crit chance per debuff on the opponent. |

What is the best Pyromancer subclass in Backpack Battles?
Due to the random nature of Backpack Battles, you won’t stick to the same Reaper subclass every time unless you’re dedicated to a singular style of play. Instead, you’ll want to choose your subclass based on how your gear has set you up for this particular run. This is the direction I lean in particular situations.
- If you’re going for a build based around upgraded pans and food, the Alchemist is a great build. Upgraded potions can give you that extra boost just when you need it too, while the random buff is a great bonus if surrounded by food to bring the timer down.
- Venomancer is perfect for a Poison or Pet build, giving you the Luck at the start of the battle to protect that Poison damage alongside a healthy health boost from pets. It’s also easy to build from here, picking up luck items, pets (plushies!), and poison where you can.
- If nothing obvious is jumping out, or you’ve crafted a few vampiric items such as the Hungry Blade and Vampiric Armor, Vampiress is my go-to subclass of choice. The fact it makes Poison also heals you through Vampirism gives you better odds at finding compatible items, which is always welcomed.
