FromSoftware fans debate what’s next for the studio

Ah FromSoftware, you make games that are really quite excellent, and everyone wants maybe just a little bit more. Following the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, fans have been speculating on Twitter what's next for the studio.

This speculation is understandable, as frankly it's been quite some time since FromSoftware have been able to operate in the shadows, and we've all known exactly what's been coming for a good while now, which makes this new silent period very strange indeed. We went from Dark Souls 3 to Sekiro, to Elden Ring, then Armored Core showed up to change my life for a hot minute, and then finally Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree came along to give everyone something to argue about for a bit. But now... well nobody really knows.

Elden Ring is finished, Miyazaki did an interview with Chinese outlet Campfire Camp some time ago to confirm that after Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring would see no more DLC. And a direct sequel seems unlikely, at least in the immediate future. Dark Souls too is a done deal, with Dark Souls 3 being the final entry. Bloodborne 2? In your wildest dreams, buster.

So then, what do fans think is next for FromSoftware? One Twitter thread started by user @MesasLG had plenty of ideas floating around, and even offered up a great suggestion themselves.

Sci-fi horror would certainly be a new direction for FromSoftware, and with Armored Core being about the furthest thing from fantasy possible, and their years of experience putting the horror into the SoulsBorneRingDieTwice games, it's certainly something they could manage handily. Plus, a Blame! and H.R Giger inspired game would absolutely rock, and whilst Blame! might not have seen much in the way of direct video game adapations, H.R Giger has proven himself to be a great source of video game inspiration, with Scorn released back in 2022 drawing from his work directly.

More than a few people mention something in the same style as Sekiro, in an entirely single player, more heavily narrative based game with a major combat focus. On the other end of the spectrum, many want something that focuses on magic the same way Sekiro focused on swords.

And this one in particular is interesting, because there has long been some rampant speculation about a 'leaked' FromSoftware game called 'Spellbound'.

Now whilst you might see a lot of mentions of this Spellbound when looking up FromSoftware, it's worth bearing in mind that most of the supposed leaks have been... weak to say the least. One image, speculated to be AI generated, and some 'details' that seem more like a fan fiction than anything actually concrete.

Reddit has even established a community around this supposed title, although most people are there to make light fun of what is most likely an entirely fictional title.

With all this said, the only folks who can really tell us what FromSoftware are up to are FromSoftware, and we'll all just have to wait patiently until they decided to grace us with yet another title that will change the nature of gaming as we know it. Personally, I think it'd be mad funny if they just decided to give us all total whiplash and do a point and click dating simulator, but I can only dream.
