Elden Ring is a notoriously difficult game and dark caves and dungeons are nearly impossible to explore without a Torch or Lantern. Like many helpful items in Elden Ring, these can be purchased from the many merchants dotted around the map.
A Lantern is a bit harder to come by than a Torch and can be purchased at the merchant nearest to the Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace. This Site of Grace is most easily reached once players have defeated the first major boss, Godrick the Grafted, and exit the Stormveil Castle. The Lantern will be available to purchase for 1,800 Runes.
You can purchase a Torch much earlier in the game. Once players load into the world and complete the small tutorial-like section, they can head north to find the Church of Elleh. This is an important location in the game for a few reasons but serves as a useful place for players to tool up. The merchant within this Church, Kale, will have a Torch for sale for a measly 200 Runes.

What other important items does Kale carry?
Kale will sell players several useful items aside from the Torch. Most notably, players can purchase a Crafting Kit from this merchant for just 300 Runes. This item allows players to craft anywhere as long as they have the required ingredients. Players can also purchase a Telescope from Kale for 500 Runes, giving them an increased range of vision.
