I booted Final Fantasy XVI and was faced with a choice—do I play on Graphics or Performance Mode? It didn't take me long to decide, as I prefer a stable frame rate, and FFXVI looks fantastic in both modes. But this decision isn't easy for everyone, and you may be wondering whether you should play FFXVI on Graphics or Performance Mode.
FFXVI Graphics Mode Explained
Those looking to enjoy the most visually appealing version of FFXVI should turn to Graphics Mode. This will run the game at 4K while sacrificing framerate, as Graphics Mode is capped at 30FPS. Another thing to consider is that some players have reported their PS5 overheating in Graphics Mode.
FFXVI Performance Mode Explained
Performance Mode is the opposite, sacrificing graphics in favor of frames per second. With this mode, you'll be playing in 60 FPS, but only up to 1440p or 1080p. This sacrifice in graphics allows the game to run better, and we saw few frame drops during the demo.
Should I play FFXVI on Graphics or Performance Mode?
Ultimately the choice is up to you. Consider whether you want a pretty game or a game with consistent performance and fewer frame drops. I prefer playing Performance Mode myself. If you do not have a display capable of running 4K graphics, then you might as well stick with Performance Mode and have a consistent 60 FPS.
Square Enix may update and patch the game later to create a middle ground or perfect Performance Mode to enable 60 FPS, but we'll have to wait and see whether this comes true. For now, you'll have to decide between graphics or performance.
