MMOs and speedruns aren’t things you usually associate with each other, but Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 is set to change that as Final Fantasy XIV joins the event with a Palace of the Dead run! This was announced by runner Angelus Demonus on Twitter on December 9, 2022.
The run will see Angelus take on the floors 171-180 of the Palace of the Dead, a rogue-like dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV where the enemies, floor layouts, treasures, and traps change every run. Climbing the many floors of the Palace of the Dead, and its successor Heaven on High, are some of the hardest individual challenges in Final Fantasy XIV. The “Necromancer” title, which is given for successfully clearing the challenge without dying, is one of the rarest and most sought after monikers in-game.

The run will take place on January 13, 2023 as part of AGDQ 2023, at 3:32pm PT, although the time is subject to change. The run is expected to take under an hour, an impressive feat given the random elements of the dungeon. Randomness is probably the biggest enemy of all speedruns, and PotD speedrunning definitely has plenty of it.
AGDQ is an annual speedrunning event that sees hundreds of gamers come together to beat beloved games as fast as possible in aid of charity. AGDQ 2023 will take place from January 8, 2023 until January 14, 2023, raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. This year's event will take place online once again, as AGDQ struggles to return to an offline format post-pandemic. For more information, check out the event’s official website.
