While Final Fantasy XIV players around the world have been enjoying the Dawntrail expansion and all of its new content, they've also been anxious for Data Center travel to reopen, which temporarily closed due to server congestion. However, with the 7.05 patch drop, many are wondering if the Data Center Travel has opened back up.
Which Data Centers can be traveled to in FFXIV?
If you've been one of the many FFXIV players wondering when in the Seven Hells that worldwide Data Center Travel would reopen, you're in luck. As of Patch 7.05, travel restrictions that were put in place at the launch of Dawntrail to contend with server congestion have been lifted, and you can now travel to any Data Center or World Visit anywhere that you wish. This is especially happy news for players on Dynamis, who have essentially been in quarantine since the newer Data Center was added.
However, there is a small catch. Per the announcement made on The Lodestone, while in-game travel has reopened everywhere, new regulations have also been put into place to help promote an "even distribution of players" across every World and Data Center.
Based on World Classifications, this means that if a World Server on a certain Data Center is designated as "congested", the number of players allowed to Data Center/World Visit travel to that World will be substantially lower than that of "preferred" Worlds, which experience lower overall server traffic.
The Lodestone announcement dictates it as follows:
Standard Worlds with no Congested Worlds within the same Logical Data Center
- World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
- Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Standard
Standard Worlds with one or more Congested Worlds within the same Logical Data Center
- World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
- Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Greatly Reduced
New and Preferred Worlds
- World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
- Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Increased
Congested Worlds
- World Visit Login Capacity: Reduced
- Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Greatly Reduced
While it may not necessarily be the return to complete normalcy that we'd want, this is undoubtedly to ensure that server traffic doesn't pendulum swing and surge to the point that restrictions would have to go back into place. Whether these new regulations are permanent remains to be seen, but they will remain for the foreseeable future, at least until all servers (particularly the newer ones) balance out.
If you want to travel to a Data Center and/or a World Server that's known to be regularly congested, I suggest traveling there during off-peak hours (early morning or late at night). If you're coming from another congested World, be mindful of when you wish to return home, as you might find yourself unexpectedly stuck until traffic eases up.
Also, when you try to travel to a known congested Data Center, some World Servers within it may be unavailable (as seen above), as they're experiencing significantly high traffic. However, we've learned that you can still travel to these servers once you're actively in that Data Center. You may receive a traffic-related error or two but a few attempts should get you where you want to go.
