How to Clean a Keyboard Properly | Computer Keyboard Cleaning Guide

When you hear people say that your keyboard is one of the dirtiest surfaces in your house, you will be a lot more motivated to clean it. Fortunately, cleaning your keyboard is a relatively simple task if you follow the correct steps.

The first thing you want to do is unplug your keyboard if it is wired or make sure it is powered off if it is wireless. Also, take note of your keys and whether they stick out or are flush with your keyboard.

Once your keyboard is unplugged or turned off, you will want to turn it upside down and shake off any loose debris. It is best to do so over a trashcan or a towel to make the cleanup easier. Any stubborn debris or lodged debris can be removed with compressed air. The best technique is to move in a zigzag pattern with the can at an angle. Make sure to come at your keyboard in different directions to get all four sides of your keys. If any debris remains, you may need to remove your keys to get at it. Verify that your keys can be removed and do so carefully to prevent damaging them or your keyboard. Alternatives to removing your keys could be using tape or a vacuum.

Once you have removed all the debris on the keyboard you will next want to wipe down the keyboard. You can use either disinfectant wipes or rubbing alcohol with a soft microfiber rag to remove smudges and any oil from your hands. Make sure to get the tops and sides of the keys as well as in the grooves between them. The one thing you never want to do is use water directly on the keyboard and never submerge it in water. Spray whatever cleaning solution you plan to use on a rag and then apply it that way.

Following these steps will ensure you have a clean and disinfected keyboard. It is good to regularly clean your keyboard to prevent keys from getting stuck and in general to prevent germs. The better you take care of your keyboard the longer it will last.
