How to Clean a Mousepad | How to Properly Wash a Mousepad

Time to clean that hand grime!

Cleanliness is super important these days, and your mousepad is a pretty major source of germs and bacteria. Your mousepad sits under your hand all day as you slide your hand against it, inevitably leaving behind skin, sweat, and other nastiness. Here are a tips for getting it nice and clean!

Washing machine

Most neoprene mousepads are washing machine safe! If you have a washing machine it's generally completely safe to toss your neoprene mousepad in there with some laundry detergent to get it clean. Once done you can safely let it air dry. Avoid putting it in the dryer, since the high heat could damage it. This method works great if your mousepad is stitched along the edges. If it's not you might want a gentler method to ensure that the fabric top doesn't start to separate from the rubber bottom.

Hand washing

If your mousepad isn't stitched along the edges then the washing machine might be a bit too rough on it. In that case a short soak in a warm sink with some laundry detergent and then a gentle hand scrubbing with a soft brush to coax any dirt out should do the trick. Once done it's fine to let it air dry.

Avoid heavy duty cleaners and solvents

You may be tempted to hit your mousepad with some type of solvent or surface cleaner, like you would older plastic-top mousepads or your desk top. It's best to avoid this practice since the fabric top of mousepads is usually glued in place, and heavy duty cleaners and solvents can dissolve that glue and cause the two halves to separate.

Cleaning your mousepad is potentially more important than cleaning your mouse and keyboard. Neoprene and fabric hold dirt and germs much better than hard plastic surfaces. So if it has been a while since you got that new mousepad, it might be time for a cleaning.
