Honkai Star Rail community disappointed by scarcity of 4-Star characters

Scarcity hurts enjoyment.

With the recent announcement of version 2.3, HoYoverse has revealed that Honkai Star Rail will not feature any new four-star characters. Instead, two new five-star characters – Firefly and Jade – will be debuting in the game as a part of the next update.

The Honkai Star Rail community, however, is unhappy with this direction, with numerous players voicing their disappointment over the lack of new four-star characters. On Reddit, users have pointed out that this is the third consecutive update without a new four-star character, leading to concerns that developers are giving priority to five-star characters while neglecting lower-tier ones.

Five-star characters are undeniably powerful and are often considered the best in Honkai Star Rail, but many players argue that neglecting other tiers is unsustainable in the long run, claiming it hampers the ability to form well-balanced team compositions which is a crucial aspect of the gameplay.

Lately, we've seen new faces like Kirara, Lynette, Freminet, Chevreuse, Charlotte, Gaming, and Sethos, but only a few have really mattered in the story. HoYoverse would do well by fans to focus on making fewer new characters that are more meaningful and well-integrated into the game.

Some users have also mentioned that not everyone can afford to spend money on limited units, which particularly impacts free-to-play (F2P) players who suffer the most, as they must grind heavily to secure five-star characters. On top of this, the meta shifts with each patch, making it necessary to collect every five-star character to keep up.

If we dive deeper, you'll notice that this trend is not only limited to Honkai Star Rail, as we've seen similar across other HoYoverse games such as Genshin Impact, which has also observed relatively few four-star character releases in the past year. On top of that, Honkai Impact 3 has slowed down the release of A-rank characters compared to S-rank ones, meaning HoYoverse may be prioritizing the more profitable five-star characters rather than focusing on 4-star units.

In any case, it's evident that the community is not happy with this approach and the developers will likely need to tackle this issue in future updates.
