Over 100,000 people are playing a banana clicker game on Steam right now

Click. The. Banana.

Ever wanted to just click a banana repeatedly on your screen and do nothing else? Well, good news! Banana is here to allow you to do just that, and 100,000 people are busy clicking the iconic yellow fruit... for some reason.

This free clicker game has snagged itself a top 10 spot on the list of most active Steam games. It's sandwiched between GTA V and Rust (impressive competition) in the #8 spot at the time of writing. I can't help but wonder; why is it so popular?

The truth is, I have no idea. It seems as though a skin drops in-game every few hours, and this skin can be sold on the marketplace for a few cents. It looks like you could earn 0.01 EUR every three hours or so.

That's hardly a living wage. So again we must ask the question, why has this game overtaken GTA V in current players? It's not because it's free - there are plenty of free games on Steam that would die for such a high spot on the charts.

Could the answer be hidden amongst the reviews? Currently, the reviews (over 4000 of them) sit at very positive. One user, Nu, claimed that the game had become a lifeline for him. Another user, SlumCamera, recommended the game even though the banana exited his screen and killed his family. Not true, of course, but certainly worth mentioning for the laugh it gave me.

However, the truth may be found in some of the more serious reviews. One user points toward the fact that you can make actual money from playing this game, even though the amount is negligible. It's such a small amount that if you left your computer running with the game on, your power bill would likely outstrip your earnings.

There is one final theory. Perhaps, in our world of constant overstimulation, the humble banana offers a brief moment of ultimate simplicity. A moment in which all your worries melt away and the only important thing left in the universe is clicking that banana one more time.

We may never know the truth, but if you'll excuse me, I have a banana to go click on. Long live the clickable banana!
