The Shade can be very difficult to find evidence for in Phasmophobia because it is a fairly inactive Ghost. Experienced players will be able to identify the Shade based on its other unique traits and even make sure the Ghost can't initiate a Hunt. They also favor specific events and Interactions, making it easier to pinpoint when observing their behavior. Here's how to identify a Shade in Phasmophobia.
All Shade Evidence in Phasmophobia
The Shade's unique set of evidence is EMF 5, Ghost Writing, and Freezing Temperatures. Shades also prefer to hiss at the player and will not perform events or manifest themselves if multiple players are around. When it does manifest, the Shade will prefer to show itself in its shadowy form rather than fully manifesting or appearing translucent.
Shade Strengths and Weaknesses and what they mean in Phasmophobia
The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Shade are written in the Journal as:
- Strength - Shades are much harder to find.
- Weakness - The ghost will not enter a hunt if there are multiple people nearby.
The Strength of the Shade refers to it being a very inactive Ghost. They will not Hunt until players have an average Sanity of around 35%, and they do not perform events when multiple players are around. As a result, the Shade can be tricky to gather evidence for but can still be forced to do Ghost Writing when using a Voodoo Doll.

The Weakness of the Shade refers to its inability to Hunt if more than one player is near it. One of the biggest misconceptions about the Shade, however, is that players must be in the Ghost Room for it to be unable to Hunt. Shades will walk to nearby rooms or hallways, making it possible for them to initiate a Hunt.
Tips for identifying a Shade in Phasmophobia
Players trying to gather the evidence for a Shade can have a lot of difficulty in doing so. When playing in a group, placing a Video Camera by a Ghost Writing Book can keep players from having to stay in the Ghost Room. This is useful for when players are really low on Sanity or are exhausted by the Ghost not giving them any evidence. The Voodoo Doll and Tarot Cards can also force the Shade to do Interactions, potentially giving off EMF 5 or even Ghost Writing. Both of these Cursed Objects can be very dangerous but can speed up investigations significantly.
When playing on Nightmare, or if a Shade isn't giving evidence, players can examine the behavior of the Shade instead. Even on low Sanity, if the Ghost will not initiate a Hunt when two or more players are in the room, it is most likely a Shade. They will manifest more often as a shadowy figure and hiss in players' ears, making them easier to identify. Smudging the Ghost Room will also make it so the Ghost's activity is increased, making the Shade easier to get evidence from.
