Roblox is seeing a significant shift in its player base, with a notable increase in older users. During the 2024 Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company revealed that 58% of its 79.5 million daily active users are now aged 13 or older. This marks a 26% year-over-year growth for that age group in Q2 2024, which is a major change in the platform’s demographics.
Roblox’s CEO, David Baszucki, emphasized in a news post how this growing age group is shaping the platform's future. "When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were motivated by a question that still drives the company today: How do humans connect through play?" Baszucki highlighted the company’s dedication to expanding globally, creating experiences for all age groups, and growing Roblox's in-game economy.
This isn’t the first time Roblox has reported a surge in older users. In 2023, it announced that 55% of its users were over the age of 13, with its fastest-growing segment being the 17-24 demographic. Now, with the 13+ player base making up more than half of the platform, Roblox is doubling down on efforts to cater to this audience.
One of the new features Roblox has developed for this older demographic is Roblox Party, a tool designed to make group play and communication easier. Party will allow users aged 9 and older to group up and explore their favorite Roblox experiences together. For users 13 and up with phone-verified accounts, Party will also introduce voice chat, allowing more communication both in and out of game experiences. The text chat feature is expected to roll out by the end of the year, with voice chat following shortly after.
As Roblox grows, it’s clear that the platform is moving beyond its reputation as a kids' game platform. Whether it’s for gaming, socializing, or working on creative projects, Roblox is evolving, and its audience is evolving with it.
