In Super Mario Wonder, one wrong move can send you straight into a pit of spikes. But for anyone new to 2D Mario games on the Nintendo Switch, the controls can be a little bit hard to get used to.

Luckily, the controls for Super Mario Wonder don't make any big changes from previous releases on the console. If you're looking to memorize them before you hit the next world, then you're in luck! Below, you'll find the layout for all the controls in Super Mario Wonder.

The controls for Super Mario Wonder are fairly typical of a 2D platformer game for the Nintendo Switch; these controls will be the same whether you are using the Joy-Cons or a Pro Controller to play.

  • Holding Y is a run or dash ability.
  • Tapping Y is for using your current power, like throwing fireballs or using your elephant trunk. You can pick up water, throw water, and hit enemies with your trunk as an elephant with Y.
  • B is jump.
  • X is for emoting.
  • Press and hold A to switch powers. A balloon will pop up with any held powers, then you can jump into it to pick it up.
  • Pressing or holding ZL is for crouching.
  • ZR and R are both spin jumps. Press ZR or R while spin jumping to do another little half spin.
  • Jump against a horizontal surface and hold the left stick towards it to slide down the surface.

You can also play with a single Joy-Con turned sideways if you want to play multiplayer. The controls are basically the same, with a couple of minor changes. The left bumper no longer works for crouching; you'll need to use down on the left stick instead. All the buttons are rotated as well, so instead of B for jumping, you would need to press either A on the right Joy-Con or left on the left Joy-Con.

How to change controls in Super Mario Wonder

There are only two keybinds that can be changed in Super Mario Wonder: the run/dash buttons and the ground-pound. Both of these can be changed in the settings menu, which is accessed by pressing Plus on the Joy-Con, then selecting Settings from the left part of the menu.

  • While Y is dash and B jump by default, you can switch those. This might be easier for those who are more used to PlayStation or Xbox controllers to wrap their heads around.
  • By default, the ground-pound is done by holding the left stick down then pressing ZL in the air. If you want this to be a little easier, perhaps for a younger player, you can change it in settings to just be pressing ZL while midair.
