Super Mario Bros Wonder Trailer Breakdown: Wonder Flower, all Characters, & More

Mario goes for the goal with that Goomba, Mario SCORES!

Super Mario was the very first platformer I ever played back when I was a kid, and seeing a Super Mario Bros Wonder showcased at Nintendo Direct featuring new gameplay left me breathless. It seems our favorite plumber going back to being a 2D sidescroller, like in the golden days of platforming, but with many new twists!

Everything in the Super Mario Bros Wonder Nintendo Direct Trailer

At first glance, Super Mario Bros Wonder takes us back to the days of simple 2D sidescrolling games, but the trailer quickly reveals plenty of new features. When picking up the Wonder Flower, the very level changed with Warp Pipes moving up and down—some even moving in a worm-like fashion, which Mario uses as an opportunity to pick up some out-of-reach objects and bonus points.

New Mario power-ups in Super Mario Bros Wonder

We could see Mario change in the trailer as well! In a few short gameplay scenes, Mario stretches out and becomes a big spikey ball, using his own momentum to break through obstacles in a Sonic-like fashion for a nice change of pace.

Perhaps the most impressive and comical power-up of all was shown when Mario picked up an oddly-shaped fruit resembling an elephant, after which a staggering change occurred, transforming Mario into a hulking elephant-like character that was able to kick an unsuspecting Goomba right off the level.

All playable characters in Super Mario Bros Wonder

During the middle portion of the trailer, both Yoshi and Princess Daisy are shown as playable, as well as Mario's long-term wingman Luigi. It looks like a couch co-op with up to four players will be possible, which I can't wait to try. Nintendo could have more unlockable characters in store for us, but nothing is confirmed at this point in time.
