Youtubers Life 2 is a fun content creator simulator, but it lacks character customization – Hands-on impressions

This simulation marries its sub-genres well, but it may leave fans, old and new, puzzled.

Youtubers Life 2 is the second official installment in the Youtubers Life franchise from indie developer U-Play. Our early impressions of gameplay offered a wide array of quests to keep your character busy, but it is possible not all players will feel fully satisfied customizing their avatar how they see fit. While the game still seems promising enough to keep its footing where it counts, some areas could use further development in order to draw in new fans.

Play as a Content Creator

In YouTubers Life 2, you play as a NewTube content creator who is starting their career anew in the idyllic town of NewTuber city, a place filled with other YouTubers. Roam the town, record your own videos, meet new friends, take your friendly drone everywhere you go, and much more. You will slowly grow your fame through video recording, editing, and even social media. While you wait for the cash to roll in, run errands for quick cash, or hang out with the locals. Once your popularity (and wallet) grows, you may customize your home and character into your ideal online celebrity.

Balanced and Engaging Gameplay

Youtubers Life 2 provides a great balance between mission-oriented gameplay and a life simulation experience. Your player has a set amount of quests to complete, as well as optional side quests and commissions, while still being allowed the freedom to roam the map and interact with NPCs. There's an appealing equilibrium that prevents the experience from feeling neither restrictive nor aimless—which is complemented by a modern, appealing cartoon art style. Raiser and U-Play have not strayed far from the aesthetic of previous games, which will likely make loyal fans feel welcome.

Some Clarifications Needed

However, the tutorial lacks detail. This may be fine for those that are more familiar with older installments, but it runs the risk of alienating new players. It seems possible that your player cannot receive a five-star rating for recording or editing until they progress further in the game, but this remains unexplained.

Some might also find it curious that a game called Youtubers Life 2 has players uploading their videos and living in places called NewTube. It is jarring, albeit confusing, how players live within close proximity to real-life celebrities like PewDiePie, yet have phone apps called NewTube and Instalife. This might merely be a feature of the preview, but it causes unnecessary perplexity.

Cleaning Up

As Youtubers Life 2 quickly approaches release, the game's identity crisis leaves much desired in the realm of confidence. A more daunting issue, however, was the limited options for player customization, in terms of clothing and accessories. Your character is limited to plain, unisex clothing with sometimes drab designs and colors. While the hair and skin tones currently available are ambitious, there is still room for improvement for the sake of diverse representation. Hopefully, U-Play will provide more content in this area upon launch or provide more options within in-game shops. It would also be nice to see an improvement upon the tutorial system with more clear instructions.
